The year of Leading Women
This year, the University of London, in collaboration with its member institutions, launched its ‘Leading Women’ campaign.
2018 marks the 150th anniversary of women being permitted to sit ‘special examinations’ at the University of London and with that, being admitted for the first time in Britain to higher education.
The campaign celebrates exceptional women by sharing stories of women leading both by being the first, and
by leading through their inspirational educational and professional achievements.
Alice Thomas
Graduated in 2013, did an internship and three years in equine practice followed by 18 months in industry and I’m now an independent equine nutritionist at VetEqui-Nutrition and small animal vet in between. All of which I love!
Philippa Sprake Gibbons
I graduated in 2008. After a farm animal internship at the RVC I moved to the USA to do a large animal internal medicine residency at Texas A&M. I spent four years on faculty at A&M and have just moved to Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee as an assistant professor in food animal.
Angela Spar
I graduated in 2002 (after a spinal surgery in my final year) and am
a small animal veterinarian in North West England. My career and family has taken me on a detour to New York for 14 years and am now firmly back in England to stay. I’m married to a fellow RVC graduate and have two awesome children.
Jenny Hull
I graduated in 2007 and spent 10 years in farm practice. In January this year I started my own dedicated farm animal practice specialising in beef and sheep work and provide beef and sheep consultancy services as far away as Poland. I am studying for my sheep certificate, sit on BCVA board, BVDFREE board, RUMA antibiotics target task force and I feel like I am making a difference at the heart of policy-making.

So... to coincide with this, in March, as we celebrated ‘International Women’s Day’ we wanted to acknowledge and enjoy our female alumni success stories. We asked for your life and career stories through social media and here are some of the things you shared with us.
Thank you to everyone who contributed, it is a delight to hear your successes and achievements.

Helen Baldwin
I graduated in 2013 after completing the graduate accelerated programme (I had a previous BSc in Combined Honours - Microbiology & Zoology). Following graduation I spent four years working in private equine practice.
I now work for the University of
Liverpool at the Leahurst Equine Practice and split my time between clinical work, teaching and research. I have a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice. In my spare time I compete at local Strongwoman events and coach Japanese Ju-jitsu.
Christianne Glossop
Graduated College in 1979. Varied career specialising in food animal reproduction and medicine. 2001 changed everything when I signed up to the Government Veterinary Service to help fight FMD. Currently Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales where the fight against bovine TB is a top priority.
Zoë DeBarro
Graduated in 1997. Few years
in mixed practice in Bristol and Hertfordshire, before settling in small animal practice near Cambridge. Head Vet for Village Vet Cottenham, plus one of the vets for Wood Green, The Animal’s Charity. Special interests include feline medicine, shelter medicine and acupuncture.
