Kevin is a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Pathobiology and Population Sciences. His current interests include all aspects of One Health and the use of systems thinking in developing an understanding of complex problems and identifying potential solutions.

Kevin grew up and studied in South Africa, completing a BSc in Agriculture (Animal Science) and then a BVSc at Onderstepoort, Pretoria. After a short period of clinical veterinary work in South Africa he moved to the UK and worked in several private veterinary clinics before purchasing his own, which he managed for 13 years. Looking for a change in career direction, he enrolled and completed an MSc One Health (Infectious diseases) in 2013/14 at the RVC and LSHTM, which included a research project on human, livestock and zoonotic diseases affecting the livelihoods of pastoralists in Ngorongoro, Tanzania. After the MSc OH, Kevin has worked at the RVC in a variety of projects primarily in East and Southern Africa. He completed his PhD part-time in 2023, which was on a systems approach to South African livestock-derived food, generating policy insights to develop a more equitable and environmentally sustainable food system for safe, healthy, and nutritious food.

Kevin is currently working with Barbara Haesler in the Sustainable and Healthy Food Systems (SHEFS) programme, with a focus on the livestock-derived food system in South Africa, specifically, the commercial broiler system.

He has been involved in the following projects in the past:

  • Methods and Metrics for measuring antibiotic use at the granular level in human and livestock health in LMICs (Secondment to LSHTM)
  • Cost-benefit and feasibility analysis for establishing a foot and mouth disease free zone in Rukwa region in Tanzania (WTO/ Standards and Trade Development Facility)
  • Feasibility study for the establishment of FMD-free fresh meat producing cattle subpopulations in Zimbabwe: (WTO/ Standards and Trade Development Facility)
  • A Rapid assessment of antimicrobial use in animals and antimicrobial resistance in low and middle income countries, Uganda Country Profile - contribution to World Bank global report on the Economic Cost of Antimicrobial Resistance
  • The ACIAR funded Nkuku4 project with the University of Sydney, with Jonathan Rushton, Market and value chain analysis of village poultry systems in Tanzania and Zambia
  • The NEOH project with Barbara Häsler, co-authoring the NEOH Handbook chapter on integrating health systems and providing support for publication
  • The IDRC funded SACIDs project on Ecohealth in Tanzania with Richard Kock, looking at One Health research frameworks for emerging zoonotic disease in Maasai communities
  • The Norbrook UK Veterinary Business research project with Liz Jackson

  • The Network for the Evaluation of One Health (NEOH) / the Network for Ecohealth and One Health (NEOH)

The Network for Evaluation of One Health (NEOH) was an international EU-COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) funded network (2014-2018) that aimed to enable evaluation of One Health activities and comparison of initiatives, as well as informed decision-making and resource allocation. It was then converted into the Network for Ecohealth and One Health as the European Chapter of Ecohealth International that has several active working groups.

  • The Sustainable and Healthy Food Systems (SHEFS) programme

SHEFS is led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the RVC’s work will focus on livestock-derived foods (LDF) in South Africa.South Africa bears a triple burden of malnutrition, with persistent levels of stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and rising obesity. LDF provide an energy dense and micronutrient rich food, important for pregnant and breast-feeding women and children’s cognitive development. However, they may also present health risks through overconsumption, foodborne diseases and chemical hazards and have a greater environmental impact than plant-based diets.
