Professor Stuart Reid, Principal of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø (RVC), University of London, has been appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to the veterinary profession and higher education.

The award was announced by the Cabinet Office on 8th June 2018.  

Professor Reid is a leading veterinarian in the UK. He has had an illustrious research career and is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as a specialist in veterinary epidemiology, as well as an expert in veterinary public health by the European Board of Veterinary Specialists. A graduate of the University of Glasgow, he has led the RVC since 2011.

Stuart has been a vocal champion for One Health, an approach which recognises the interrelation of human, animal and ecosystem health, and seeks to draw on multiple disciplines to tackle the world’s major public health threats. He has helped to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge, focusing primarily on zoonotic disease and antimicrobial resistance, has published over 160 scientific papers, most recently in the journals Science and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), and has secured over £15 million in competitive funding during his career.

He was President of the RCVS, the professional regulator in the UK, in 2014-15, leading major governance changes and the implementation of the honorary ‘Doctor’ title for UK veterinarians, and has held senior offices in the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges in the USA and in the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education. He currently chairs the Mind Matters initiative of the RCVS, for which he ran the London marathon raising over £14,000 for mental health awareness.

Stuart has made significant contributions to public service, having been a trustee of The Donkey Sanctuary since 1996 and Chairman since 2007. He is also a Trustee of the University of London has served in the Veterinary Products Committee, and now sits on the Board of the Food Standards Agency in the UK.

Upon learning that he has been appointed CBE, Stuart said: “I am delighted and humbled. It is truly a privilege to have had the opportunity to be part of both the veterinary profession and the university community, and to have worked with colleagues throughout my career who have a huge commitment to the common good. I am very grateful that the importance of animal health, education and science is being acknowledged in this way.”
