New uoroscopy unit arrives at the RVC
The RVC has received a generous grant from the Animal Care Trust to upgrade its uoroscopy unit, after 15 years of operation. The unit supports various clinical teams, providing advanced radiography services.
The Animal Care Trust, the RVC’s registered charity, raises funds to support a wide range of our activities aimed at improving animal health, including the purchase of cutting-edge equipment for the College’s hospitals.

multi-purpose C-arm fluoroscopy unit
The C-arm is moved to encircle the operating table in order to record and view intra-operative images and videos. Continuous screening allows real-time visualisation of contrast boluses and the movements or reactions of interventional radiology equipment. It enables digital subtraction angiography, which is essential for shunts and vascular work.
The RVC Soft Tissue Service is an international reference centre renowned for its expertise in portosystemic shunt surgery. It is the busiest centre for these types of cases in Europe, with a

interventional procedures. It allows RVC specialists to pursue the latest techniques and strengthen the standard of care provided. The unit offers vastly superior image quality and increased speed and efficiency compared to older units.

which relies on this high quality intra-operative fluoroscopy. These procedures only take place in a few referral centres in Europe. The RVC has carried out a research programme associated with portosystemic shunt clinical cases since 2004, using intraoperative fluoroscopy images.
The RVC is the UK’s leading centre for interventional radiology surgical procedures, being the first centre in the UK
and Europe to perform surgical placement of subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) systems. The SUB surgeries, which are performed by few referral centres in Europe, also require intraoperative fluoroscopy. New interventional procedures that may be possible in the future with the C-arm unit include intra-arterial chemoembolization of tumours that are inoperable with conventional surgery and sclerotherapy of idiopathic renal haematuria.
The ability to perform a high caseload of innovative surgeries enabled by the unit helps the RVC to lead the advancement of veterinary surgery and cardiac interventions worldwide and offer the most progressive treatments to referred pets.
