Dave Brodbelt is a Professor of Evidence based Veterinary Medicine at the 51郭肱利.

Dave Brodbelt graduated from the Cambridge Vet School in 1993 and undertook a residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia there. In 1998 he gained the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. He then went into private practice for 4 years prior to undertaking an Epidemiology PhD based at the Epidemiology Unit of the Animal Health Trust / 51郭肱利 looking at anaesthetic complications in veterinary practice (CEPSAF). Since then he has worked at the RVC within the Veterinary Epidemiology, Economics and Public Health (VEEPH) Group, Department of Pathobiology and Populations Sciences, focused primarily on companion animal epidemiology. He is involved in teaching epidemiology, statistics and EBVM to undergraduates and postgraduates. His research interests centre on companion animal epidemiology and research derived from electronic health records.

He is co-project leader of VetCompass, tthe RVC based companion animal surveillance programme that works with a large group of collaborating first opinion practices surveying disease trends in veterinary practice. He is chair of the , a member of the APHA led (SAEG) and is currently the Senior Vice President of , the Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine.

His main interests are companion animal epidemiology and practice based research. He is co-project leader for VetCompass, with Dr Dan O'Neill, Noel Kennedy and Prof David Church, the RVC led primary practice electronic health record project () that collects clinical data from veterinary practice management systems (PMS). He is a member of the VeNom Coding Group () that maintains standard clinical terminology for use in veterinary medicine and represents the VeNom Coding Group within the VetXML Consortium (). He is involved in a number of clinical research projects within the RVC working with colleagues in the QMHA.

In Veterinary Anaesthesia, following on from his PhD, his research interest continues to centre on perioperative morbid and mortal complications. His PhD thesis is available as a PDF below.

He is involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. He teaches evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM), epidemiology and statistics to BVetMed veterinary undergraduates, BSc and BScVN students and the Clinical Residents (SCTS) at the RVC. He is the Research Skills Module leader for the MSc programmes in Veterinary Epidemiology, One Health and Wild Animal Biology and Health and contributes to the Distance Learning MSc in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health at the RVC.

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

His clinical interests centre around Anaesthesia where he is involved in the research project supervision of the Senior Clinical Traning Scholars (SCTS) in veterinary anaesthesia as well as in other companion animal disciplines.

He is a member and chair of the VeNom Coding Group, that has developed and maintains the standard veterinary terminology, the VeNom Codes ().

He is a member of the VetXML consortium () that is defining and driving electronic communication standards to facilitate communication and exchange data across the profession.

We aim to deepen understanding of the animal welfare impacts of dental and ear disease in rabbits, and to identify breed related risk factors for these. We plan to use the new information to improve rabbit welfare by raising awareness of any dental and ear health implications from selecting for rabbit with extreme morphology.

All BVetMed veterinary undergraduates at the RVC are required to complete a formal piece of research (named Research Project 2 “RP2”) as part of their route towards gaining a veterinary degree. This project is a Level 7 body of work that is at the level of a master’s project. VetCompass supports students to undertake these RP2 projects at the RVC. The Kennel Club Charitable Trust has supported several VetCompass RP2s annually on topics related to canine health.
Canine leptospirosis: improving diagnostics and understanding epidemiology in UK dogs

This project aims to explore the epidemiology of canine leptospirosis in the UK by identifying spatial patterns of disease, diagnosis risk factors and incidence of disease. Alongside this work is being undertaken to explore vaccine usage and vaccine adverse events. Additionally, a novel serological assay with potentialp DIVA ability is being explored.

CatScan

The CatScan study was set up to investigate the prevalence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in the general cat population by screening apparently healthy cats in rehoming centres.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a thickening (hypertrophy) of the muscles of the wall of the left ventricle of the heart causing the heart to be less able to relax between contractions. In some cases, this can lead to an increase in pressure in the left atrium which then enlarges. The increase in pressure in the left atrium causes back pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs and a fluid build up in the lungs. In severe cases, a blood clot can sometimes form within the enlarged left atrium.

Do lop-eared rabbits have more dental and aural disease than erect-eared rabbits?

Initial evidence has shown that rabbits with artificially selected extreme morphological traits of lop ears and brachycephaly experience reduced welfare through a higher prevalence of painful ear and teeth problems, a cause for concern as lops and dwarves are the most popular pet rabbit breeds in the UK. This study aims to determine the prevalence of these diseases in UK pet rabbits using VetCompass data that represents approximately 30% of UK practices.

The project will provide relevant and reliable evidence that can support a more universal approach from veterinary surgeons and provide advice to dog owners regarding neutering.

VetCompass is a welfare-focussed epidemiological research project that shares anonymised clinical data from veterinary practices to investigate the frequency and nature of companion animal health problems.

Modern veterinary medicine has access to increasingly effective tools for diagnosis and treatment; yet many animals still continue to suffer from disorders that might be reduced or avoided if risks were better understood and measured.
