Bone and Joint Mechanobiology
The work performed in the Bone and Joint Mechanobiology group, led by Professor Andrew Pitsillides, currently focuses on the mechanical load: biological response interface in the control of endochondral ossification in embryo and post-natal long bone growth, the mechanoadaptive changes in bone shape and mass in growth, adulthood and ageing and bone and joint changes in osteoarthritis.
His group have pioneered in vivo mouse models for adjustable, non-invasive bone and joint loading to explore responses to functional and traumatic load. His current work also seeks to identify how essential growth-linked and inflammation-related pathways contribute to disease vulnerability or functional adaptation in bone and joint mechanobiology.
